The Canton of Ticino recently presented its Energy and Climate Plan (Pecc). The plan outlines ambitious goals for energy independence. It also aims for climate neutrality and resilience to climate change by 2050. The plan received approval from the State Council on July 10, 2024. It has now been submitted to the Grand Council for approval. Power-to-X is a key element.
According to Claudio Zali, Director of the Department of Territory, the canton is prioritizing environmental care despite challenging conditions. The Pecc includes a projection of Ticino’s energy and climate scenario (TI-2050), which aims for a 90% reduction in per capita carbon dioxide emissions over the next 25 years.
Nicola Solcà, Head of the Air, Water, and Soil Protection Section, explained that the strategy relies on several key measures:
- The mandatory installation of photovoltaic panels on new buildings and existing structures with a surface area exceeding 300 square meters.
- The replacement of old heating systems with heat pumps.
- The development of a coordinated district heating network.
- The integration of Power-to-X technologies for energy storage and conversion.
These measures reflect Ticino’s commitment to a sustainable energy future, aligning with broader national and international climate objectives.
