We are very happy to welcome the Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana (SUPSI) as a new member of SPIN. The Ticino-based university of applied sciences strengthens Switzerland’s network of research and innovation partners working on the transition to defossilised energy systems.

SUPSI’s contribution to Power-to-X research

SUPSI has extensive expertise in applied energy research and technology transfer. Its research institutes — including the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Technology (MEMTi), the Institute of Systems and Applied Electronics (ISEA), the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA-USI-SUPSI), and the Institute for Applied Sustainability in the Built Environment (ISAAC), among others — conduct advanced research across key domains. These include energy conversion modeling, materials for energy applications, synthetic fuel production, energy storage technologies, renewable energy conversion, power electronics, and grid integration. Together, these areas form critical components of the PtX value chain.

SUPSI’s research teams are actively engaged in projects ranging from renewable energy systems and energy storage to synthetic fuel production and process intensification in the energy sector. Their focus is on bridging the gap between academic research and industrial practice, enabling the advancement of emerging technologies from concept development to pilot-scale validation, with the goal of accelerating the deployment of these innovative technologies to the market.

Strengthening national collaboration

By joining SPIN, SUPSI strengthens the collaborative framework connecting academia, industry, and policy actors across Switzerland. Its involvement extends SPIN’s geographic presence into southern Switzerland and adds complementary competencies in modeling and simulation for PtX technologies, energy systems analysis, and interdisciplinary project development.

The partnership also opens new avenues for joint research projects, student participation in applied innovation activities, and exchanges between regional and national PtX initiatives. SUPSI’s commitment to practical, system-oriented research aligns perfectly with SPIN’s mission to connect and accelerate Swiss Power-to-X activities.

Looking ahead

SUPSI’s membership further consolidates the growing ecosystem of institutions working toward technological and regulatory advancements that support a defossilised economy. Alongside SPIN’s network, SUPSI will contribute to shaping future pathways for renewable-based fuels, sustainable industrial feedstocks, and advanced energy storage solutions — key pillars of a sustainable Swiss energy landscape.
