Method and data basis
The map is a curated, representative cross-section, not an exhaustive register. Projects are classified by technology (colour) and by development status (marker): operational means the plant is producing; under construction means a final investment decision has been taken and building has started; planned and feasibility study cover pre-FID projects; paused and cancelled are kept visible so the picture stays honest.
Marker positions: Swiss entries are placed on the plant site itself (verified against operator addresses and the Swiss federal geoportal); entries marked municipality only have no published site yet. International entries are placed at area level (roughly ±1–2 km) unless stated otherwise.
Each project record carries its own sources (operator press releases and project pages, IEA Hydrogen Projects Database, eFuel Alliance, government and trade press) and the date it was last checked. The dataset is reviewed every Monday; status changes, additions and removals are logged before publication.
About the Global Power-to-X Map
What the map shows
The map gives an interactive overview of 73 selected projects in 24 countries across the global Power-to-X landscape: green hydrogen, e-fuels, e-methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). It spans pioneers commissioned as early as 2007 and projects targeting start-up by 2030.
Each project is plotted at its actual site and classified along two dimensions.
Technology — the marker colour:
- Green Hydrogen — electrolysis powered by renewable electricity, including projects feeding hydrogen into green steel, ammonia or industrial use.
- E-Fuels — Power-to-Liquid and related routes converting green hydrogen and captured CO₂ into synthetic gasoline, kerosene, diesel or methanol.
- SAF — sustainable aviation fuel plants. Where a plant is HEFA- or waste-based rather than Power-to-X, it is labelled Biofuel and can be hidden with the “Power-to-X only” switch (6 entries).
- Methanol — renewable and e-methanol production, mainly for shipping and the chemical industry.
Development status — the marker shape:
- Filled marker: Operational (37 projects)

- Hollow marker: Planned (10) or Feasibility study (9) — pre-FID

Clicking a marker or a list entry opens the project record with operator, capacity, product, commissioning year, a short description, the latest news, the sources consulted and the date the entry was last checked. The search field filters by project, country, operator, product, technology or status; the legend chips switch technologies and statuses on and off.
Data basis and sources
Every entry was verified against primary sources: operator press releases and project pages, the IEA Hydrogen Projects Database, the eFuel Alliance production map, government publications and reputable trade press (Hydrogen Insight, Argus, Reuters and others). The sources for each project are listed in its record, together with a confidence rating.
The dataset is reviewed every Monday. Minor updates (new sources, capacity figures, dates) are applied directly; status changes, additions and removals are checked by the SPIN editorial team before publication. Current dataset: v2026.09.07b, last verified 7 Sep 2026.
Scope and limitations
The selection is representative, not exhaustive: with well over a thousand green hydrogen projects announced worldwide, no single map can capture the full pipeline. The map does not cover grey or blue hydrogen, fossil-based methanol, conventional biofuels beyond the SAF entries shown for context, or carbon capture projects without a Power-to-X component.
