In an exciting development for sustainable mobility in Switzerland, Hydrospider, along with its partners, the Förderverein H2-Mobilität Schweiz (also a member of SPIN) and Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility, has achieved a significant milestone. As of June 2024, the company has distributed its first 1,000 tonnes of green hydrogen, showcasing the successful establishment of a unique ecosystem for the procurement, production, and logistics of green hydrogen from CO2-free sources, according to a media release published by Hydrospider.

Building a Sustainable Hydrogen Ecosystem

Since 2020, Hydrospider has been at the forefront of green hydrogen production, utilizing renewable hydropower for CO2-free hydrogen production. This effort has been bolstered by strategic partnerships and a shared vision for a sustainable future.

Located in Niedergösgen, Hydrospider’s 2 MW electrolysis plant at Alpiq’s Gösgen run-of-river power plant is capable of producing up to 300 tonnes of hydrogen annually. This production capacity is sufficient to supply fuel for 40 to 50 lorries or approximately 1700 cars each year.

Impact and Achievements

Hydrospider’s green hydrogen is currently fueling around 20 operators of fuel cell electric lorries. These hydrogen-powered trucks have collectively covered over 9 million kilometers, resulting in a significant environmental impact by saving more than 7,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This achievement is a testament to the potential of hydrogen as a sustainable alternative to conventional fuels in heavy goods transport.

A Vision for the Future

Nicolas Crettenand, CEO of Hydrospider, expressed his enthusiasm for this milestone: “We are delighted that we at Hydrospider have reached 1,000 tonnes of green hydrogen for the first time. This is an important milestone for us as a company. It shows that our ecosystem promotes sustainable mobility. We at Hydrospider are convinced that green hydrogen can also make an important contribution to the decarbonisation of heavy goods transport in Switzerland in the future.”

This milestone not only highlights Hydrospider’s commitment to sustainability but also underscores the potential for green hydrogen to revolutionize the transport sector. As Hydrospider continues to expand its production capabilities and partnerships, the future looks promising for a greener, more sustainable Switzerland.
