The California Energy Commission (CEC) has launched a new grant funding opportunity that should be on the radar of every Swiss Power-to-X innovator: GFO-25-308 – Distributed Clean Hydrogen Production with Onsite End Use (H2ONSITE). SPIN became aware of this call through its exchanges with the California Energy Commission and is sharing it with the Swiss Power-to-X community: the solicitation is open to all eligible applicants, and we believe Swiss know-how has a lot to offer here.

What the call is about

The solicitation funds the demonstration of distributed-scale hydrogen production facilities – up to 5 metric tons per day – that are co-located with storage and end use. The goal is to reduce clean hydrogen production costs, bring down retail prices, and defossilise hard-to-electrify sectors. In other words: exactly the kind of decentralised, integrated Power-to-X thinking that many SPIN members have been pioneering in Switzerland – electrolysis, storage and offtake combined at a single site, cutting out costly distribution.

Why this matters for Switzerland

California is one of the world’s most dynamic clean hydrogen markets, and the CEC’s Clean Hydrogen Program is putting real money behind distributed production. For Swiss technology providers and project developers, H2ONSITE is an opportunity to bring Swiss electrolyser, storage and systems-integration know-how into a flagship market. The call is open to all eligible applicants – eligibility requirements and full details are set out in the solicitation manual.

Pre-application workshop on 16 June

The CEC will hold a remote pre-application workshop, currently scheduled for Tuesday, 16 June 2026, 10:00–12:00 Pacific time (19:00–21:00 CEST). Participation is optional but encouraged – it is the best opportunity to hear directly from CEC staff and ask questions about the solicitation. The workshop is accessible via Zoom or by phone; all access details are on the workshop event page.

Please note: all dates and deadlines in this solicitation – including the workshop date – are subject to change. Always check the CEC’s official pages for the latest schedule before planning around them.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the CEC’s new ECAMS portal, and applicants need to create a user account first. All solicitation documents, attachments and the current deadlines are available on the CEC’s solicitation page.
