The Power-to-X world delivered another set of signals this week: the first-ever price benchmarks for electrolytic sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF), a billion-litre SAF project in Brazil, new electrode materials that cut the cost of green hydrogen, and another large electrolyser order in China. Individually, each is good news. Together, they show a sector moving from vision to market reality.
Argus launches the first methanol-to-jet price indexes for e-SAF
Price reporting agency Argus Media has begun publishing weekly methanol-to-jet cost indexes for nine production locations worldwide, alongside parallel e-methanol cost assessments. The trigger: ASTM International has effectively qualified the methanol-to-jet pathway as a valid route for electrolytic SAF (e-SAF). Transparent price benchmarks are a precondition for long-term offtake agreements and bankable business plans – and therefore an important step towards final investment decisions for e-SAF projects.

Brazil: Energis8 targets one billion litres of SAF per year
The Brazilian company Energis8 plans to produce around one billion litres of SAF annually in Paulínia (São Paulo) from 2031, using the alcohol-to-jet route. The plant is designed as a tolling operation: customers deliver the ethanol, Energis8 converts it into jet fuel. Capital expenditure is estimated at around USD 1.3 billion, and planning is due to be completed by the end of this year. The project shows how countries with established ethanol industries can build on existing value chains to defossilise aviation at scale.

Spain: HEDERA project cuts the cost of green hydrogen
The Spanish technology institute ITE has completed the HEDERA project: new electrode materials for PEM electrolysers and a digital twin are designed to reduce degradation and optimise flexible operation with variable wind and solar power. The goal is lower production costs for green hydrogen – the foundation of every Power-to-X pathway.

China: Trina Green Hydrogen wins a 96 MW electrolyser order
Trina Green Hydrogen has secured a major order for 96 MW of alkaline electrolysis cells for a large wind-solar-hydrogen project in western China – another sign of the accelerating Power-to-X build-out in the country.

Why this matters
Price transparency, gigascale projects, cheaper electrolysis and rapid deployment: each of this week’s news items addresses one of the classic barriers to Power-to-X – and together they document a sector on its way to industrial maturity. For aviation in particular, the toolbox for the future keeps filling up: maybe a little less flying – definitely fossil-free flying.
