With a media release we informed yesterday about the final program of the next SPIN DAY, the second of the Power-to-X DAYS:

Zurich, 26 September 2024. The Power-to-X DAYS, jointly organised by Avenergy, Swissmem and the Swiss Power-to-X Collaborative Innovation Network (SPIN), will take place in Schlieren on 6 and 7 November 2024. The second day, SPIN DAY, will be dedicated to the crucial question of how to enable the scaling of Power-to-X production. In his keynote address, Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin will highlight the importance of Power-to-X technologies for Switzerland. Cantonal Councillor Carmen Walker Späh will emphasise the role of the Canton of Zurich in the ramp-up of this forward-looking technology, which represents an important pillar of the energy transition.

Power-to-X is a key technology that makes it possible to convert renewable electricity into other forms of energy such as hydrogen, synthetic fuels or chemicals. This allows surplus energy from renewable sources such as wind or sun to be stored and utilised in various sectors such as mobility, industry and heating. Power-to-X will thus play a central role in reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and achieving our climate goals.

After a philosophical introduction by Stephan Klapproth in the morning, representatives from politics, the financial world, and production and technology companies will come together to explain in lectures and a panel discussion what each of these sectors needs to successfully fulfil its role in this process.

National Councillor Martin Bäumle will explain the political framework needed to create majorities for the necessary decisions, while Hans Hess, Chairman of the Board of Synhelion, will discuss how a global production infrastructure for synthetic fuels can be established. These fuels are particularly important for the defossilisation of aviation, as increasing blending quotas for synthetic fuels will be legally required in the EU and Switzerland from 2030 onwards.

The financial world also plays a central role: Nicole Vermeulen, Chief Industrial Officer at the investment company Hy24, will explain the conditions that need to be created for investments. Dr Anna Gawlikowska, CEO of Swiss AI AG, will show how artificial intelligence can support decision-making on the construction of new infrastructure.

In the discussion round, National Councillor Monika Rüegger, communications consultant and former banker Brigitte Kaps, Tanja Furrer from UBS, Arne Siemens from Porsche and Luca Schmidlin from startup AlphaSYNT will talk about the challenges their respective industries face in scaling up Power-to-X production. Brigitte Kaps will draw on her many years of experience in communications, including as a member of the management boards of international banks, to explain the hurdles that the financial world must overcome from a communications perspective. Stephan Klapproth will moderate the discussion.

‘This panel discussion will be extremely exciting,’ says Peter Metzinger, Co-Managing Director of SPIN and responsible for the programme.

In the afternoon, workshops will follow in which the participants will develop solutions for the challenges identified in the morning. The focus here is on specific measures to promote innovation and investment. The aim is to present practical solutions at the end of the day that will accelerate the ramp-up and financing of Power-to-X in Switzerland and globally.

SPIN DAY offers a unique platform for the exchange of knowledge and collaboration between politics, finance and industry. The event is aimed at anyone interested in the future of energy policy and the possibilities of Power-to-X.

The Swiss Power-to-X Collaborative Innovation Network SPIN is the network of Swiss Power-to-X networks. Its mission is to promote the exchange between Power-to-X stakeholders from research, industry, politics, administration and civil society in Switzerland and to facilitate the creation of suitable framework conditions for Power-to-X. The overarching goal of SPIN is to accelerate the 100% supply of renewable energies in Switzerland and worldwide and to achieve at least net-zero greenhouse gas emissions (especially CO2) by 2050.
