Power-to-X (PtX) technologies are key to advancing the energy transition. By converting renewable electricity into storable energy carriers like hydrogen, synthetic fuels, or methane, they help defossilize various sectors of the economy and contribute to a more sustainable energy system.
For the past 1.5 years, SPIN – the Swiss Power-to-X Collaborative Innovation Network – has maintained a detailed database of Power-to-X projects in Switzerland. This list not only provides a structured overview of ongoing initiatives but also helps connect researchers, businesses, policymakers, and public authorities.
To make this growing pool of information more visible and accessible, SPIN is now collaborating with the Coalition for Green Energy & Storage (CGES). Together, they are developing Switzerland’s first interactive Power-to-X Tracker. Hosted on the CGES website, this tool will present PtX projects on a digital map. While SPIN will continue to manage the data, CGES will focus on the visualization. The first version of the tracker is expected to launch in summer 2025.
Why Visibility Matters
Although more than 40 PtX projects have already been identified across Switzerland, many remain largely unknown due to their early or innovative nature. The new tracker aims to change this by:
- Increasing visibility: A digital overview allows for easier access to project information.
- Facilitating collaboration: A structured database supports synergies among stakeholders.
- Informing decision-making: Reliable data can help policymakers adjust regulations and assist investors in spotting new opportunities.
A Snapshot of Projects
The list of PtX projects includes a wide range of technologies and locations. Among the most notable initiatives are:
- Sisslerfeld, AG: Demonstration plant for synthetic jet fuel by Airborn Fuels Switzerland AG
- Horgen, ZH: GreenHub collaboration involving KVA Horgen, FH OST, HZI, HSLU, SUPSI, EPFL, FH Yverdon, AlphaSYNT, and Solidera
- Rapperswil, SG: Methanol demonstrator by FH OST
- Buchs, AG: Waste-to-Hydrogen project by Hitachi Zosen Inova and GEKAL
- Dietikon, ZH: Synthetic methane production by Limeco
- Rothenburg, LU: Green hydrogen mobility project by Auto AG Group
- Neuhausen, SH: Methanol for winter heating by Methanology
- Zug, ZG: Power-to-Methanol by CGES
- Zurich, ZH: National hydrogen network for heavy duty vehicles by H2 Energy
The full database includes further projects in hydrogen production, synthetic fuels, methanol synthesis, and carbon capture.
Looking Ahead
As the energy transition accelerates, Switzerland has the opportunity to position itself as a leader in Power-to-X technologies.
The collaboration between SPIN and CGES marks a significant step toward a more visible and connected Power-to-X landscape in Switzerland. With the upcoming launch of the interactive tracker, stakeholders and the public alike will gain easier access to insights on how PtX technologies are being applied throughout the country.
This tool will also serve as a central hub for monitoring developments, fostering cooperation, and supporting the expansion of PtX technologies.
The first results of this joint initiative are set to be released in summer 2025. In the meantime let us know if you know a Power-to-X project that should be included in the list. Drop us a pre-formatted email by clicking here.
