Swiss company Accelleron is urging energy-intensive industries to join forces and create strong partnerships to boost demand for green hydrogen. The call highlights the need for cross-sector cooperation to close the gap between planned and required production volumes.
A Call for Joint Action
During London International Shipping Week, Accelleron presented its new report “Dead End: What is preventing the shift to CO₂-neutral fuels in shipping?” and appealed to energy-intensive industries to collaborate on hydrogen demand. The company argues that without such partnerships, scaling up affordable CO₂-neutral fuels will remain out of reach.
The Numbers Behind the Challenge
500 million tonnes of green hydrogen are needed to decarbonize key sectors such as shipping, aviation, steel, cement, agriculture and energy. Current plans only foresee 38 million tonnes. Closing this gap requires around USD 9 trillion in investments. So far, commitments remain below USD 320 billion.
Partnerships as the Missing Piece
Accelleron emphasizes that technology for CO₂-neutral fuels in shipping already exists. The missing element is large-scale, affordable supply. The company calls for:
Cross-sector cooperation to build critical demand mass. Joint purchasing agreements that provide investment certainty. Sector-wide adoption of hydrogen-based fuels to accelerate the path to net-zero.
Outlook for Hydrogen and Industry
The report concludes that only through coordinated action can the gap between ambition and reality be closed. Energy-intensive industries have the opportunity to pool demand, attract investment, and help make hydrogen-based CO₂-neutral fuels competitive in global markets.
