SPIN welcomes PARAFUEL as a new member. The company is developing a large-scale green methanol project. This project takes advantage of favorable boundary conditions in Paraguay. The aim is to provide synthetic fuels that avoid fossil CO₂ emissions. With its first project in Paraguay, PARAFUEL is preparing to supply renewable methanol (RFNBO grade) starting in 2029.
Switzerland is seen as one of the first promising markets for eFuels. The reason: synthetic fuels are counted towards the CO₂ fleet emission targets of vehicle importers. Buying eFuel from a producer to decrease CO₂ fleet emissions is now only a tiny little 1 percent more expensive as paying CO₂ penalties.
But other than the penalties, this approach actually protects the climate and reduces CO₂ emissions. This regulatory framework opens a direct pathway for market entry. It makes Switzerland attractive for early commercial deployment of Power-to-X solutions. (As a matter of fact, SPIN has already been contacted by the export organisation of another country which also sees Switzerland as a possible early market for their eFuels production plans.)
By joining SPIN, PARAFUEL contributes to building synergies within Switzerland’s innovation ecosystem for Power-to-X. It also strengthens the role of synthetic fuels in the energy transition. Without the import of molecular eFuels the energy transition won’t be possible and humanity will not reach its climate targets.
