SPIN member Axpo has signed a power purchase agreement with TURN2X, a Munich-based cleantech company specializing in the production of green hydrogen and e-methane. Under the agreement, Axpo will supply renewable electricity for TURN2X’s new Power-to-X facility in Extremadura, Spain, through the energy solutions developer Aquila Clean Energy.
The plant will produce green hydrogen and e-methane on an industrial scale, demonstrating how renewable (and hard to store) electricity can be converted into climate-neutral (and easy to store) molecules. These can replace fossil fuels in hard-to-electrify applications in sectors such as transport, heating and industry.
According to Ignacio Soneira, CEO of Axpo Iberia, the collaboration is “a strong proof of the industrial feasibility of green hydrogen, meeting strict sustainability and economic criteria.” He emphasized that initiatives like this actively contribute to the defossilisation of energy systems while ensuring full traceability in line with new EU regulations.
Philip Kessler, CEO of TURN2X, added that the project showcases “how our modular and flexible technology can be deployed much faster than conventional large-scale plants.”
Projects like this highlight how Power-to-X technologies are moving from pilot projects to industrial application — a key step for Europe’s energy transition and for achieving climate-neutral goals.
