From the Bundestag to the e-fuels market: Christian Dürr to lead Munich startup GLE360

The company is building the first platform to connect e-fuel producers around the world with buyers in Europe. It does not act as a broker alone: GLE360 also provides logistics, technical consulting and the certification services required under European law — precisely the market infrastructure that has so far been missing between producers and offtakers.

The legal framework is in place. The EU explicitly recognises e-fuels as a climate protection instrument, and Germany has enshrined a gradually rising share of renewable fuels in law. What has been lacking is a functioning marketplace. Speaking to the FAZ, Dürr made the point that cars, ships and aircraft can already run on renewable fuels today — what is missing is a platform on which producers and buyers can find each other, and that is precisely the gap GLE360 is working to close.

From energy policy to energy entrepreneurship

Dürr, a 49-year-old economist from Lower Saxony, spent more than two decades in politics: FDP parliamentary group leader in the Lower Saxony state parliament from 2009 to 2017, group leader in the German Bundestag from 2021 to 2025, and federal party chairman until May 2026. He began his career as an energy policy specialist and wrote his degree thesis on CO₂ certificate trading. As group leader in Berlin’s coalition government he fought for technology-open climate policy, including the registration of combustion-engine cars running on e-fuels beyond 2035.

“Innovations in energy generation and climate protection have always inspired me. I am very pleased that I can now implement as an entrepreneur what I actively promoted as a politician,” Dürr says. “The approach of relying exclusively on a single technology, such as electric mobility, will not work. Germany and Europe will continue to have to import a large portion of their energy needs. The import and use of e-fuels are a crucial step toward regaining competitiveness while keeping our climate goals in sight.”

Founder Michael Kühlwein frames the appointment as a growth-stage decision: “We’ve now reached a pivotal point with our startup. The technical infrastructure behind the scenes is in place, and the market for climate-neutral fuels is set to take off rapidly. We have always been impressed by his perspective that successful climate protection requires a variety of technologies.”

Why this matters for Power-to-X

Germany imports over 65 percent of its energy — mostly as crude oil and natural gas — and the mobility sector remains almost entirely dependent on imported fossil fuels. Electrification alone will not resolve this dependence: grids and renewable generation in Europe are nowhere near sufficient. The energy transition in transport therefore needs a second pillar — synthetic fuels produced from renewable electricity and CO₂ that work in existing engines, tanks and pipelines.

Seen from Switzerland, three things stand out. First, market infrastructure is being built: trading platforms, certification and logistics are the plumbing a real Power-to-X market needs, and someone is now investing in it. Second, political heavyweights are betting their careers on this sector — a strong indicator of where they expect growth. And third, the demand pull from Europe that Swiss technology providers and project developers are counting on becomes more tangible when producers and buyers can actually find each other. The e-fuels market has long been announced. Now it is being organised.
