Swisspower, an alliance of leading Swiss municipal utilities, has recently joined SPIN, the Swiss Power-to-X Collaborative Innovation Network. This partnership marks a significant step in the further development of Power-to-X (PtX) technologies within Switzerland.

Power-to-X is playing an increasingly important role in the energy transition, as it enables renewable energy to be stored and transported efficiently. By converting electricity into other forms of energy, such as hydrogen, surpluses from renewable energy sources can be utilised and CO2 emissions significantly reduced.

The addition of Swisspower AG to SPIN brings a strong local connection and extensive experience in energy management and plant construction to the network. Swisspower is made up of 21 municipal utilities that promote a sustainable and innovative energy supply. Their participation adds valuable perspectives to the network with regard to the implementation of PtX projects at municipal level. Swisspower played a leading role in the construction of the first commercial power-to-gas plant in Switzerland, at Limeco in Dietikon.

SPIN, which already networks virtually all leading players from industry, science and politics, will be strengthened by Swisspower’s membership in its ability to promote holistic and practicable PtX solutions.

Another advantage of this collaboration is the possibility of integrating PtX projects directly into the context of urban energy plans. This means that innovative approaches such as the use of local renewable energy sources, such as biogenic waste and hydropower, can be planned and realised more efficiently.

The partnership between Swisspower and SPIN not only promotes the technological development and implementation of PtX in Switzerland, but also supports the national goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a sustainable energy future.

With Swisspower joining SPIN, it is clear that the energy supply companies in Switzerland want to take a proactive role in the introduction and scaling of Power-to-X. This step is a significant contribution to achieving a fully sustainable and decarbonised energy supply in Switzerland.
